Grease: ROTPL
Creative Direction, experience design, fabrication, and installation
Vox brought PBZ in to transform Mel’s Drive-In into the Frosty Palace for the launch of Paramount+ series Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies.
The brief came with two fixed points: the venue and the request to recreate Grease’s iconic diner. Armed with the project logo and little else, we researched the original film and available previews of the new series, developed the missing assets, and worked out what could plausibly be achieved inside a real restaurant.
The transformation included wraparound architectural graphics, two eight-foot Frosty sculptures, custom neon, sculptural signage, an entrance arch, wrapped booths, hand-screened pennants, letterman jackets, and classic cars. Together, they turned Mel’s into the classic movie diner, complete with themed food, customized merchandise, and photo moments.
PBZ fabricated the environment, installed it overnight, and struck it after the event. Mel’s closed for the entire transformation, giving us one night to take the diner back to the ’50s.
The public experience ran April 6 and 7, 2023, with an invite-only opening attended by talent from the series. Paramount+ also presented an outdoor screening in the parking lot.
